In January 1979, the
Alabama Organ Center (AOC) was developed to increase the supply of organs for transplantation. The AOC, approved by the Health Care Financing Administration and the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), has been designated by these organizations to provide organ and tissue procurement for Alabama.
The center participates in a nationwide effort to save lives through the United Network for Organ Sharing and maintains a 24-hour emergency telephone line for organ donation information and coordination.
