The fourth of July is a time to celebrate our nation's independence with food, family and... fireworks. But before you grab your sparklers and cherry bombs, be mindful of these firework safety tips to ensure your holiday is fun AND safe.
- Fireworks should only be handled by responsible adults.
- Be sure to read all warnings on fireworks before use.
- Only light fireworks on a flat surface, away from people and flammable materials.
- If a firework doesn't function properly, never try to relight it.
- Have a bucket of water on hand in case of firework malfunction or fire.
- Immerse used fireworks in water.
- Don't drink alcohol while lighting fireworks.
- Only light one firework at a time.
- Never smoke around fireworks.
- Avoid lighting fireworks on windy nights.
- Know the laws: if fireworks are illegal in your area, don't use them.
- Leave pets indoors when lighting fireworks to protect their sensitive hearing.
- Use a long lighter when lighting fireworks to protect your hands.
Fireworks can be a festive way to enjoy the holiday, but remember that they can be dangerous. If you or someone you are with has an accident due to fireworks, extinguish the fire with water from a bucket or hose and bring them to the UAB emergency room - the only level 1 trauma center certified by the American College of Surgeons in the state.
